Iconic Jewellery: Royal Edition
Jewellery doesn't get much more special than some of the dazzling items worn by royalty. From tiaras to brooches and bracelets, we've taken a look at some of the most iconic jewellery the Windsor vaults have to offer...
The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara
This classic diamond tiara is a favourite amongst the Queen's jewellery collection. Made by Wolff & Co back in 1893, the tiara was actually a wedding gift for Mary of Teck, grandmother of the current queen. Named after the committee who presented Mary of Teck with the tiara, and raised the funds in order to purchase the jewellery for the royal bride, Queen Elizabeth II eventually inherited the tiara in 1947. Since receiving it as a wedding present from Queen Mary, it has become the Queen's most worn tiara. Reports have stated that the tiara is both light and comfortable, and you can see the queen wearing it in portraits as well as on stamps and currency.
The Cartier Art Deco Bracelets
Initially purchased individually by King George VI (the Queen's father), as a gift for the Queen's mother between 1925 and 1926, the five Cartier art deco bracelets have become a firm favourite of the Queen and she is often seen wearing them at official engagements. Three of the stunning bracelets feature sapphires, emeralds and rubies as well as diamonds, while the other two are completely set with diamonds. They also come with a frame, allowing three of the bracelets to be worn together, meaning they complete a bandeau tiara.
Coronation Earrings
In 1858, Queen Victoria lost a lawsuit to her cousin, the King of Hanover. As a result, the Queen was made to hand over several diamond jewels, all of which had initially belonged to their shared grandmother, Queen Charlotte. With her jewellery collection now hardly befitting her position, Queen Victoria had several new items made. These included a pair of diamond collet earrings which featured a large pendant drop. Made from diamonds, the earrings have since become well known as the coronation earrings, with Queen Elizabeth II wearing them at her coronation in 1953.
Diamond Sapphire Engagement Ring
When you think about Princess Dianas jewellery, this ring comes to mind. The beautiful and large oval sapphire is surrounded by fourteen diamonds and set in 18 carat white gold. Given to Princess Diana when she got engaged to Prince Charles at the age of just 19, the ring has stayed in the royal family and is now worn by The Duchess of Cambridge.
