Antique Edwardian Albert Chain Maltese Cross Medallion Silver 18Ct Gold Dated 1904

This impressive antique Edwardian Albert chain has been crafted in Sterling Silver and gilded in 18ct Yellow Gold. Alternating paperclip and circular links have been joined together along the length of the chain, and a T-bar, originally used to attach the piece to the button hole of a waistcoat or jacket, is joined to the central link. The chain ends in two trigger clasps.

The medallion which hangs from this central link is crafted in the shape of a Maltese cross – an eight pointed star representing the eight obligations and aspirations of the Knights Hospitallers of St John, which are: to live in truth, have faith, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and whole­hearted, and to endure persecution.

The cross is topped with a crown and ringed with laurels, both representing sovereignty, and a shield representing fortitude sits at its heart. The piece is fully hallmarked and dated, and bears the makers initials “J.V” on the back of the medallion.

This is a beautiful piece, rich in meaning and steeped in history.
