Details
A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain, made up of solid silver curb links that graduate in size toward the middle. Each is stamped with a sterling Lion mark and has been gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. The Albert has been converted into a necklace over time and is complete with one of its original claw clasps and a large, engraved shield medallion suspended from the bottom. Â Â
Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake.
This is a solid Edwardian Albert chain, with a good weight and beautiful yellow gold bloom. It’s complete with the maker’s mark (H.B.) and Birmingham hallmarks on the medallion and clasp, dating it to 1905.  Â
