Details
Created circa 1910 in support of the women’s suffrage movement, this exquisite antique Edwardian pendant is crafted in 15ct yellow gold featuring an openwork quatrefoil design, for good luck. Its thin, milgrain bars evoke the prison bars endured by jailed activists, while the pearl-studded wreath resting atop them symbolises victory and solidarity. A vivid purple amethyst sits within a floral setting at its heart, balanced by a swinging green peridot drop at the base.
The distinctive gemstone palette was commonly worn by the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), one of the leading forces behind the British suffrage movement in the early 1900s. The colours carried powerful symbolism: violet for loyalty, white for purity, and green for hope - sometimes interpreted as the message “Give Women Votes!”
More than a beautiful accessory, this is a rare and collectable piece of social history – a wonderful tribute to the remarkable women who helped change the world. It’s remained in excellent condition and is accompanied by a new, silky 9ct gold curb chain to display it on, measuring 19.8 inches.
