Details
Dating to the mid-19th century, this grand antique padlock collar necklace is crafted in silver and finished in a rich 18ct yellow-gilt. Measuring 16.5 inches, the collar is formed from a sequence of matching disc and triple-bar links, each delicately engraved with romantic forget-me-not wreath motifs.
The focal point, is a large trefoil padlock clasp, featuring hand-carved, chocolate-brown banded agates, with intricate hand-chased foliate engraving to the reverse and a small, round hallmark at the base, indicating its Continental European origin.
During the Victorian era, natural Scottish pebble jewellery became highly sought after, while padlock pieces emerged as a particularly evocative expression of romantic devotion. The lock symbolised a heart kept safely and faithfully by its beloved, while the forget-me-not was associated with remembrance and enduring affection.
With its rich golden glow, beautifully preserved decoration and wonderfully sentimental symbolism, this exceptional Victorian collar is a captivating addition to any collection of antique jewellery. Elegant when draped along the collarbone, it is a distinctive statement piece that carries with it both history and romance.
