A grand antique Victorian Albert chain from the late 19^th Century consisting of long twisted links, with smaller knot links in between. All are crafted in solid yellow gold and bear “375/ 9ct” stamps upon each link.  

Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19^th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

It’s a wonderful design with a good weight and fitted with claw clasps, marked with the maker’s initials (J.G.& S) and a T-bar at the bottom that has been added over time.
