A grand antique Victorian Albert chain comprising of chunky, graduated silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling lion mark and gilded in sunny 18ct yellow gold. It’s fitted with claw clasps and a classic T-bar, bearing Birmingham hallmarks dating between 1896 and 1897, alongside various maker’s marks, suggesting the bar and clasps have been added or replaced over time.
In the 19th century, Albert chains were both a practical and stylish accessory for gentlemen, used to secure a pocket watch or fob to a waistcoat. By the First World War, they took on new meaning when soldiers’ wives began wearing them as keepsakes. Today, these historic chains are commonly worn as versatile and fashionable necklaces.
