A grand antique Albert chain, made up of graduated silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling Lion mark and gilded in a sunny 18ct yellow gold. It’s complete with claw clasps, a T-bar and a large crest medallion suspended from an extension of chain at the end. It was made to commemorate the end of WW1 in 1918 and has been finely engraved with depictions of laurels, ivy and a Fleur-de-lis, often representing honour, devotion and triumph.
Albert chains were both a fashionable and practical accessory for a gentleman in the 20th Century, often adorned with a pocket watch or fob and secured to the buttonhole of a waistcoat for quick access. Today they’re also worn as versatile and stylish necklaces; a custom started by the wives of soldiers during WW1 who wore the chains as a keepsake.
This substantial antique Albert chain has a good weight and bright yellow bloom and was clearly a cherished heirloom. All components were made in Birmingham but have various maker’s marks and hallmarks, indicating the T-bar and chain were made in 1900 and the medallion was added later in 1918 after the war.
