Antique Victorian Albert Curb Chain Silver 18ct Gold Gilt

A grand antique Victorian Albert chain consisting of elongated, oval links with coiled wire in the centre, attached by lengths of curb chain in between. Each solid silver link bears a sterling lion mark and has been gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. 

Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19^th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

It's a silky chain with a good weight and fitted with two claw clasps bearing Birmingham hallmarks, dating to 1891 and 1897, suggesting one was added to the chain at a later date.
