Details
This fabulous antique Victorian articulated fish stick pin is ingeniously crafted from multiple overlapping silver sections, gilded in 18ct yellow gold vermeil, allowing the body to move and wiggle in a fluid, remarkably lifelike way when handled. Finely engraved scales, delicately ribbed fins, and charming pink-ringed eyes bring the creature vividly to life. Suspended from the mouth is a fine gold chain connecting it to a long pin, crowned with an ornate filigree finial - serving both as a decorative flourish and a built-in safety mechanism.
Whimsical animal-themed novelty jewellery flourished during the 19th century, fuelled by the Victorian fascination with natural history and the marine world. In many maritime and European cultures, gifting a fish ornament was also considered a token of good luck, safe travels, or prosperity. This piece would have been worn on a lapel, scarf, or tie, allowing the pin to stay securely fastened while the flexible fish dangled gracefully as a conversation starter.
A wonderful Victorian collector’s piece, preserved in remarkable condition for well over a century. Whether retained as part of a distinguished collection or worn once again as a whimsical statement accessory, this articulated fish pin is certain to spark conversation and amusement.
