Details
This substantial antique Victorian cameo brooch showcases a high-relief bullmouth shell carving, depicting two graceful women in classical Roman dress, one sipping from a bowl, the other caught mid-dance, ribbon twirling in her hand. The scene likely represents two Bacchantes, spirited followers of Bacchus, God of wine and festivity and is beautifully executed, with remarkable attention to the movement of their garments, which seem almost to flutter and loop with life.
Roman-style cameos were highly coveted throughout the 19th century, especially during the “Grand Tour” days, when British travellers brought home artistic treasures inspired by ancient Rome. They were a personal favourite of Queen Victoria also and were carved in the same classic style, usually depicting Gods and characters from Roman or Greek mythology.
This well-preserved Victorian cameo is mounted in an ornately decorated pinchbeck frame adorned with delicate forget-me-not motifs. Complete with its original pin and safety chain, it is a wonderfully collectable piece for admirers of Victorian jewellery and classical art alike.
