The reverse is also lavishly decorated with floral engraving, while the interior retains its original rims and windows, backed with royal blue silk.
Imagine the delight of the Victorian lady who opened this enchanting gift on a frosty Christmas morning in the late 19th century. During an era when Christmas gift-giving was becoming a romantic art form, such a locket was an intimate declaration of affection. In the Victorian language of flowers, roses symbolised deep love and devotion, transforming a festive greeting into a treasured keepsake intended to hold photographs or locks of a beloved’s hair.
Remarkably preserved for over 130 years, this rare Victorian locket remains in exceptional condition, with vivid, flawless enamel and a crisp closing snap. Complete with an antique green presentation box from “The Sussex Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Coy” in Brighton, it is an extraordinary collector’s piece and a truly unforgettable heirloom to gift this Christmas.
