An exceptional antique Victorian brooch by the prestigious Manchester jewellers Ollivant & Botsford (c.1860–1870), accompanied by its original violet silk and velvet-lined presentation box. Crafted in the bold Etruscan Revival style popular during the mid-19th Century, the brooch centres on an impressive 18ct yellow gold love knot, an enduring Victorian symbol of an unbreakable bond. Two elegant snake-link chain festoons descend from the bottom, ending in articulated fox-tail tassels that sway gracefully with movement.
At its heart is a heavenly sky-blue enamel dome, evoking the forget-me-not, a cherished emblem of remembrance, fidelity and enduring love. Resting atop is a gold star set with a lustrous natural half-pearl, symbolising a pure guiding star leading a loved one home.
Almost certainly commissioned as a deeply personal token of affection - perhaps during a period of separation, or more poignantly for mourning - the reverse conceals a secret locket compartment, traditionally intended to hold a treasured lock of a loved one’s hair so it remained forever close to the heart.
Remarkably preserved after more than 150 years, the brooch remains in excellent condition, with pristine enamel, complete articulated tassels, and its original presentation case. Rich in symbolism and exceptional craftsmanship, it is a rare and highly collectable example of Victorian high jewellery from one of the leading high-end jewellers of the era.
