Between you and me, this antique French fob pendant is simply superb! The ornate fob is fashioned in a sunny, golden pinchbeck and is intricately embossed with floral engraving, including depictions of forget-me-nots. It holds a personalised intaglio seal underneath, carved from a polished carnelian, with the French phrase “Entre Nous” engraved underneath, meaning “Between Us”.
Fob pendants were a fashionable accessory in the 19th Century, often worn on a chain alongside a pocket watch, with an engraved seal that could be used to stamp sealing wax on important letters or documents. The inscription “Between Us” hints at its use on confidential letters, maybe even secret love letters to a distant sweetheart, as the romantic use of forget-me-nots may suggest.
Dating to the mid 19th Century, this exquisite French fob pendant has remained in excellent condition and hangs from an engraved coiled rope and split-ring loop. It’s a great collector’s piece and likely has a rich and fascinating story behind it.
