Antique Victorian Hebe And Zeus Cameo Brooch 18ct Gold With Box

An exquisite antique Victorian cameo brooch made in London in the mid 19^th Century. The piece is built around a magnificent high relief cameo in the centre, expertly hand carved from a bullmouth shell. 

Roman style Cameo’s were highly sought after during the 19^th Century and often depicted Goddesses and characters from mythology. This one depicts the goddess of youth “Hebe” who is seen here bearing a cup for her father Zeus who is sometimes depicted as an eagle, symbolising immortality and regeneration.  

The cameo is held in an 18ct gold frame with beautiful, chased patterning and three ball and icicle droppers hanging below. It’s fitted with a strong pin and safety chain on the back for added security when worn. 

This is a rare antique find and a wonderful piece of history. It’s complete with its original box with the maker’s insignia “J. Snowden - Late - W. Mott” printed on the underside of the lid.

CONDITION: Good – One hairline fault across the left side of the cameo with some glue residue at the back. The box no longer fastens either but this is minimal considering the age of both.
