Antique Victorian Horseshoe Locket 18ct Gold With Coloured Photograph

An exquisite antique Victorian 18ct gold locket decorated with chased foliate patterning on both sides. A large, high-relief horseshoe stands out on the front, with an image of a fox head etched on the back, suggesting the original owner was particularly fond of horse riding or hunting.

The locket has developed a lovely patina over time and opens to reveal an original rim and window on the left preserving a beautiful photograph of an elegant young woman with ringlets, wearing blue hair accessories and another locket around her neck. The photograph has been enhanced with paint or water colours which was fashionable in the late 19th Century and allowed black and white photographs to be much more vivid and life-like. 

This is a one of a kind antique treasure that was clearly very dear to its original owner and has remained in pristine condition across the centuries.
