This substantial antique Victorian rope guard chain dates to the late 19th Century. The thick rope-twist chain is expertly fashioned in solid 9ct yellow gold and has a silky feel and lovely sheen, with a claw clasp fitted along the length. 

Guard chains were at the height of popularity in the 18th & 19th Century. Both fashionable and practical, they were deliberately long enough to be tucked into a belt and the clasp was usually adorned with a pocket watch, lorgnette or muff.  

This is a grand antique Guard chain with a good weight and ample length, measuring 74 inches. It can be worn as one long chain or looped two to three times around the neck, creating luxurious festoons of gold.
