Details
A delightful antique micro mosaic dog brooch depicting an adorable King Charles Spaniel laid upon a bed of green grass. The level of detail is astonishing, with realistic colouring and shading inlaid expertly into the setting by a true master of the art.
The blue plaque setting, and high-level of detail suggest the mosaic is likely Italian-made, dating to the mid-19th Century during the “Grand tour” days. It looks to have been later re-set in a newer 15ct yellow gold bullion frame with a safety lock catch at the back, likely sometime during the early 20th century, suggesting it was a beloved heirloom piece that has been passed down through generations.
Grand Tour jewellery refers to pieces bought by British travellers visiting destinations such as Rome in the 19th century. Roman workshops became famous for their micro-mosaics, tiny glass tesserae arranged to create highly detailed images. Among the most popular subjects were dogs, including beloved British breeds like the King Charles Spaniel, made specifically to appeal to tourists seeking a beautiful and exotic piece.
This highly collectable micro-mosaic dog brooch has remained in pristine condition and likely has a wonderful story behind it. It’s perfect for anyone who adores this good-natured breed or has a special King Charles best friend at home.
