Details
This spectacular antique late Victorian collar necklace features two strands of hand-cut paste stones set in open-backed silver frames, allowing light to dance through them with a watery, diamond-like brilliance. The 14-inch strands cascade down to join a striking focal pendant, built around a large cushion-cut glass paste, framed by smaller round stones and delicate scalloped metalwork.
During the 19th Century, paste was prized as a skilled art form, producing brilliance that could rival even diamonds by candlelight. Designed to sparkle in ballrooms and theatres, its high-lead glass refracted light beautifully, letting the wearer appear regal without the cost of massive gemstones.
In excellent condition, this glamorous necklace has already lead a glamorous life and is the ultimate “something old” for a discerning bride or a crowning jewel for a collector of authentic period treasures. To evoke its original romance, wear it snugly at the throat with a plunging silk neckline or over a high lace collar for a truly regal statement.
