A beautiful antique late Victorian “Pools of Light” orb locket, dating from circa 1880–1900. The locket is formed from two high-domed, clear crystal cabochon lenses, beautifully set within a golden hinged base-metal frame with a delicate engraved border and a secure thumb-release catch.
“Pools of Light” lockets were popular sentimental jewels of the late Victorian era. Their thick, magnifying crystal lenses were designed to hold and dramatically enlarge tiny photographs, miniature portraits, or intricate woven hairwork and other treasured keepsakes. The name comes from the way the domed crystals capture and reflect light, creating the distinctive appearance of luminous little “pools of light” over the precious memento within.
Highly collectable and in excellent condition, this charming late 19th-century crystal locket is a fabulous little find. Smooth and tactile in the hand, it retains its well-preserved original lenses, which create a wonderful optical effect - ready for displaying your own cherished photograph or keepsake.
