This fabulous 15ct yellow Gold Antique Victorian brooch is of a witches heart. Circa 1880
The term witches heart means a heart with a curved point at the end, it is loaded with symbolism.
Over time the meaning has changed. In the 18th century they were viewed as tokens of love and affection and brought with it the implication that the giver had become bewitched to fall in love with the recipient. In earlier times, they were often used as protective amulets, to guard the wearer from evil.
Often the brooch was worn hidden in clothing and worn by those who were considered particularly susceptible to harm from evil spirits or fairy folk!
This beautiful 15ct Gold brooch is adorned with lovely rich blue Turquoise stones and rich creamy natural Pearls.
The Turquoise stone has healing properties, it protects the wearer from negative energy and brings good fortune. Turquoise is the symbol of friendship, and also brings peace to the home. It is also a symbol of forget me not.
Forget me not, O Lord is what a poor German knight shouted as he fell into a river. He and his lady were picking flowers by the side of the river at the time, no doubt enjoying the beautiful day around them, and yet as fate would have it, the knight's armour dragged him down to the bottom as he fell in.
Upon his cries to the Lord, he threw the blue posy of flowers to his loved one and promptly drowned. This little tale reportedly dates to around the 15th century, but no doubt had different permeations along the way, as romantic stories often do. Hence, the concept of remembrance, eternal love and faithfulness grow from this.
The Pearls have a wonderful lustre with a rich creamy tone, they are lovely lustrous and natural.
