A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain made up of solid sterling silver curb links with a medallion and vesta case suspended from the bottom. All the parts were made in Birmingham and bear hallmarks and sterling lion marks. The chain is dated 1910 and has been fitted with an older vesta case, marked 1909 and a newer medallion marked 1927.
Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.
The vesta case is chased with beautiful foliate motifs on both sides with a striker along the bottom and lid at the top with plenty of room to store matches within. The accompanying medal was awarded by Sedlescombe football club and has a rose gold shield on the front and an inscription on the back that reads: “Sedlescombe league – 1927-28 – Runners Up”.
It’s a great collector’s piece and can be worn as a traditional Albert or as a fabulous statement necklace.
