This distinguished antique Edwardian Albert chain was crafted by the renowned Birmingham jewellers Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd in 1902 - the very year of King Edward VII’s coronation. The chain is composed of solid silver curb and Figaro links, each stamped with an authentic sterling lion passant, and has been richly overlaid in sunny 18ct yellow gold.
The chain retains its original T-bar and dog-clips, each bearing the maker’s mark and Birmingham hallmarks, and is accompanied by a Victorian coin dated 1871. The coin features the young profile of Queen Victoria on the reverse, whilst the “One Shilling” on the front has been carefully sanded away, usually for the purpose of engraving a valuable sweetheart’s initials, a special date, or a personal message onto it. Likely gifted as a commemorative lucky charm, it symbolically bids farewell to the past while embracing the promise of a bright new century.
Preserved in excellent condition, this handsome Edwardian watch chain is a superb acquisition for collectors. It can be worn traditionally with a pocket watch or reimagined as a striking statement necklace, perfectly suited for layering and modern styling.
