Antique Edwardian Medallion Albert Chain Silver 18ct Gold Gilt

A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain made up of sterling silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling lion mark and gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. It’s complete with a T-bar suspended from the bottom along with an extension of chain holding a round medallion decorated with scrolled motifs around the border and an engraved crown on top. 

Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake. 

The chain dates to the early 1900s and features various maker’s marks and London hallmarks across the piece. The clasps are dated 1915, the medallion is dated 1918 and the T-Bar is dated 1924, suggesting each part has been added to the chain over time.
