Details
This grand antique Georgian rock crystal cipher ring is a remarkable survivor from the era of King George III (C. 1780 - 1790). It’s built around a magnificent clear rock crystal intaglio, expertly faceted with a large flat table and bevelled edges, resting within a closed, domed setting, with foil back to enhance the stones icy brilliance. It joins a thick gold band at the back that is lovely and smooth, glowing with the unmistakable warm patina that only antique gold possesses.
The cipher monogram, appearing to be the initials "MV" or “AW”, floats in the centre of the stone and has been skilfully hand-engraved in a fluid, intertwined fashion, mimicking elegant penmanship. It was likely a bespoke commission for a person of distinct affluence and served a dual purpose, as a stunning piece of adornment and a functional signet to press into hot wax, sealing letters and legal documents with the wearer’s identity.
To wear this ring is to carry a piece of history. It has witnessed revolutions and romance yet remains as sturdy and wearable today as the day it left the goldsmith's bench. It’s a true collector's dream and an exceptionally rare find.
