This enormous antique Georgian mourning cross pendant exemplifies the grandeur and exquisite craftsmanship characteristic of the late Regency era (Circa 1830). Fashioned from polished black onyx crossbars with softly chamfered edges, the cross is united by finely worked 18ct yellow gold mounts with spherical finials. At its centre rests a finely chased floral rosette on both sides, encircled by creeping ivy that continues around each gold cap.
During the early 19th century, mourning jewellery formed an intimate and deeply personal expression of grief, worn not merely as public declaration, but as a private act of devotion. Black stones such as onyx were favoured for their dignity, with the rose representing enduring affection, and the ivy, remembrance, and eternal attachment.
