A wonderful antique Georgian Vinaigrette book locket, modelled in 18ct yellow gold. The back and front of the book have been engraved with beautiful, scrolling artistry with depictions of love birds, forget-me-nots and a cherub, adding to the romance of the piece. Four more forget-me-nots also chase down the spine of the book and each is topped with a blue turquoise stone.
Turquoise is the birthstone of December and is considered a stone of luck and good fortune. It was often associated with the Forget-me-not in the 19th Century due to their similar sky-blue colouring and was given as a token of enduring love and remembrance.
The interior of the locket still contains its original floral grid that opens vertically, revealing a deep compartment underneath. Traditionally this would have contained a small sponge soaked in a scented perfume, or aromatic herbs such as sage and lavender, to create a pleasant aroma that followed you throughout the day. It could also be used to hold a lock of hair, photograph, or other keepsake.
This is an exquisite Georgian locket, beautifully preserved from the early 19th Century. It’s a great collector’s piece and full of romantic symbolism, making it the perfect antique gift for a loved one.
