Details
This grand antique Victorian Albert chain is composed of bold, graduated curb links, fashioned in solid sterling silver and gilded in sunny 18ct yellow gold. At its centre sits a traditional T-bar, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1898, while softly worn lion passant marks remain visible on select links, offering authentic reminders of its age and long life. The chain is finished with two new but traditional dog clips at each end to hold it secure.
Albert chains first emerged in the 19th century as both a functional and fashionable accessory for gentlemen, designed to secure a pocket watch or fob neatly to a waistcoat. By the First World War, these chains were often worn close to the heart by soldiers’ wives as cherished keepsakes.
Today, Victorian Albert chains are admired not only for their history but for their versatility and timeless style. This particular example is substantial, with a satisfying weight and a bright golden bloom. Measuring 19.5 inches in length, it can be worn traditionally or as a striking statement necklace.
