Antique Victorian Albert Chain With Medallion Silver 18ct Gold Gilt Dated 1897

A grand antique Victorian Albert chain made in Birmingham in 1897. It’s made up of chunky sterling silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling lion mark and gilded in 18ct yellow gold. It’s fitted with its original T-Bar, complete with Birmingham hallmarks, with a newer Edwardian clasp, marked 1906 and a large medallion, marked 1900 

Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19^th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

It’s a solid, substantial chain weighing over 134 grams and can be worn as a traditional Albert or as a stylish statement necklace.
