A gorgeous antique Victorian pendant/ brooch from the late 19th Century depicting a cross made up of four large pear cut amethysts with a luxurious purple hue. They weigh approx. 5ct each with a 1ct stone in the centre (approx. 21ct total).
Amethyst has been associated with faith, spirituality, and divine wisdom throughout history. During the Middle Ages, it was used to symbolise Christ's sacrifice and was worn by clergy and bishops as a sign of their faith and piety. Legend also links Saint Valentine to the stone, as he was said to have worn an amethyst ring carved with Cupid, making it a popular love token and the birthstone for February.
The stones are collet set in a 9ct gold open-back gallery with a loop and pin so it can be worn as a pendant or brooch.
