Dating to the mid 19th Century, this grand antique Victorian amethyst bishop ring is built around a large, flat table cut amethyst, weighing approx. 14 carats. It exhibits a deep-violet hue and is collet set in an ornate 18ct yellow gold gallery, featuring a thick, split-shoulder band at the back and an engraved serpent biting its own tail around the edge of the frame.
Amethyst is February's birthstone and has long been worn by bishops as a symbol of wisdom, nobility, and faith. It is also given as a token of love and commitment due to its connection with Saint Valentine, the patron saint of love. The union of the head and tail in snake rings also represents eternal devotion and gained popularity in the 19th century after Prince Albert gifted Queen Victoria a serpent ring during their courtship.
