Product Details
A wonderful antique Arts and Crafts lavaliere necklace from the late Victorian era, featuring an enchanting silver bat pendant, decorated with pink rubies and vibrant cabochon opals across the wings and body (approx. 1.3ct total).
The Arts and Crafts movement advocated a revival of traditional handicrafts in the late 19th century and used romantic, folk decoration with an influx of colour and sparkle to counteract the mechanised industrialisation of modern design.
The bat looks to have started life as a lapel clip and its wings still flap back and forth to close and open the clip at the back. It has been converted into a necklace over time with a new sterling silver paperclip chain.
It’s a wonderful design and a unique, one-off piece, displaying a mesmerising collection of natural opals.
