Details
Beautifully preserved from the late 19th century, this exquisite antique Victorian Bohemian garnet collar necklace features a striking graduation of star-shaped links, each encrusted with faceted, rose-cut pyrope garnets. These coveted “pigeon blood” stones, prized for their deep crimson glow, were mined in the historic region of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and are set in traditional “garnet gold” (tombac) settings, with a star-shaped box clasp securing the piece at the end.
Celestial jewellery grew in popularity during the 19th century, reflecting a renewed fascination with the stars and heavens. The starburst motif symbolised guidance and the spirit, while deep red Bohemian garnets, expertly faceted, were designed to glitter and dance in the glow of evening candlelight, embodying passion and enduring love.
A true collector’s treasure, this Victorian garnet necklace has undoubtedly led a fascinating life and remains in remarkable condition after more than a century. It measures 16 inches, so it can be worn alone as a striking choker, letting the garnets glow against the skin, or use the discreet hook at the reverse of the largest star to hang a cherished antique pendant.
