This is truly special, an exquisite antique Victorian mourning ring from the mid-19th Century featuring a heart at the front topped with five seed pearls and a twinkling diamond that form a forget me not, a symbol of eternal love and remembrance.
The piece is modelled entirely in 18ct gold with scrolling shoulders on each side, all highlighted in a royal blue enamel. The heart also conceals a small, hidden locket underneath that would have traditionally held a small photograph or lock of hair belonging to the deceased loved one.
It appears to have been made in tribute to Francis Gardiner Freeman who lived in BosCastle, Cornwall and died in 1866. This is revealed in a loving memorial inscription on the back that reads: “Gardiner Freeman - 6th of Nov 1866”. Further to this, there are Birmingham hallmarks on the inside of the band that also indicate the ring was made upon his death in 1866.
It was clearly very dear to its original owner and has remained intact and in excellent condition over the centuries. A beautiful antique find that deserves to be treasured once more.
