Details
Dating to the late 19th century, this exquisite antique Victorian sterling silver locket is richly decorated with a scalloped beadwork frame, pyramid-shaped studs, and a finely beaded border. It surrounds a beautifully detailed floral centrepiece, depicting a butterfly hovering above a rose, both accented with applied rose, yellow, and green gold.
A striking example of Aesthetic Movement jewellery, this locket reflects the late Victorian fascination with Japanese art, naturalism, and the philosophy of "Art for Art's Sake." Replacing the sombre styles of the early Victorian mourning period, jewellery of this era celebrated delicate, asymmetrical botanical and wildlife motifs rich in symbolism. Here, the rose represents enduring love and affection, while the butterfly symbolises the soul and the fleeting beauty of life.
Likely gifted as a romantic token of devotion or a cherished keepsake, this large silver locket has survived in excellent condition for over a century. It retains one original gold rim and window within, ready to hold your own treasured photograph.
