This exquisite antique Victorian garnet pendant is a superb example of Renaissance Revival jewellery, dating to circa 1860. At its centre glows a magnificent domed almandine garnet cabochon, foil-backed to intensify its rich crimson-red fire, and delicately crowned with a line of sparkling rose-cut diamonds that shimmer across its curved surface. The gem is encircled by an 18ct yellow gold rope-twist border, culminating in an ornate love knot at the top, with a graceful dropper suspended elegantly from the base.
This piece was almost certainly bestowed as a deeply meaningful token of love, concealing at its reverse a beautifully preserved locket compartment, once intended to cradle a treasured memento or a cherished lock of hair.
