Step into the artistic romance of the late 19th century with this breath-taking antique Victorian locket and collar necklace, dating to the height of the Aesthetic Movement (c. 1880–1890). Crafted in quality sterling silver, the collar is formed from flat, rectangular “book” links designed to sit comfortably against the skin. Two bolt ring clasps connect the collar to a large, embossed locket, beautifully finished with a silver bead trim and an engraved floral centrepiece, with rose and yellow gold overlaid over a rose, butterfly and leaves.
This design is heavily influenced by Japonisme, the 19th-century Western craze for Japanese asymmetry and natural motifs. Each book link has been meticulously hand-engraved in high relief with a variety of miniature nature scenes, including depictions of various birds, including swallows and swans, traditional emblems of love and fidelity, alongside butterflies and frogs, all highlighted with delicate gold overlay.
