Details
This wonderful antique Memento Mori Skull and cross bones pendant/ brooch is Victorian, Circa 1880.
The lovely piece features a detailed Skull and cross bones on the front hand painted on red Enamel which clashes nicely with the white bones.
The image also displays two hourglasses showing the gradual decline of time which summarises the central theme of Memento Mori which is ‘Remember that you have to die’.
During the 17th Century Memento Mori jewellery was decorated with skulls, crossbones and coffins which seem macabre today but these pieces were a reminder to cherish each waking day.
The image is set in a lovely decorative rose Gold frame, stamped 9ct on the reverse along with the makers initials.
The back of the pendant is a rich royal blue colour and fitted with a pin and catch so that the pendant can be worn as a brooch as well.
This is a unique antique find and one to be treasured for a lifetime!
