Product Details
A colourful antique French butterfly brooch from the late 19th Century decorated with glittering old cut clear paste stones across the front with eight coloured pastes on the wings emulating sapphires, rubies, emeralds and citrine’s.
Insect jewellery became increasingly popular in the late 19th Century as many were left longing to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world after the Industrial Revolution. This brought about an abundance of romanticised Insect and butterfly pieces, decorated with colourful gemstones to counteract the more mechanised, industrialisation of modern design.
The brooch is crafted in silver with gold gilt at the back and fittings that suggest the original pin was removed and replaced with a new pin over time, complete with a French silver boar mark on the catch. It's a wonderful piece that adds a hint of colour and sparkle to any outfit.
