Details
Dating to the mid-19th century, this wonderful and rare antique Victorian serpent head pendant is fashioned in silver and 18ct yellow gold, with hand-rendered scale detailing. A mesmerising collection of natural cabochon opals are pavé-set across the top, glowing with ethereal blue, green and orange hues, whilst two fiery pink garnets form its piercing eyes. The final touch is a charming gold heart, set with its own precious opal, dangling elegantly from the serpent’s mouth.
The Victorian obsession with the serpent motif was ignited by Prince Albert, who presented Queen Victoria with a snake engagement ring, instantly transforming the serpent into the ultimate romantic token of the era. Also, adorned with Victoria’s personal favourite gemstone, the opal, this piece carries a message of protection, passion, and eternal love, with the snake protectively holding the symbolic heart of the giver.
It remains in excellent condition to this day and will look wonderful adorning a gold chain once more, with the pendants flat back designed to sit comfortably against the skin. It’s the perfect antique gift for a loved one who adores romantic symbolism and unique conversation pieces that carry over a century of history.
