Whitby Jet was brought to the attention of the world by Queen Victorian who used Whitby Jet as part of her mourning attire.
Jet is a type of brown coal a fossilised wood from an ancient tree similar to the monkey puzzle tree.
Today Whitby Jet is highly collectable and sought after world wide.
The cross is set on a metal ring, this was probably worn during the mourning period.
