Vintage Albert Chain Sterling Silver 18ct Gold Gilt

A grand vintage Albert chain from the late 20^th Century made up of solid sterling silver curb links gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. It’s complete with a classic T-bar, the maker’s initials (H.R.J), and Sheffield import hallmarks at the clasp.  

Albert chains were popularised and named after Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert in the 19^th Century and were traditionally used by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.      

It’s a durable chain with a good weight and can be worn as a traditional Albert or as a stylish necklace.
