An exquisite Victorian revival bracelet from the mid 20th Century featuring seven high-relief cameos, hand carved from bullmouth shell. They depict seven of the chief Roman Gods, each riding in a chariot, pulled by various animals.
The cameos include Jupiter: Eagle chariot, Mars: Four-horse chariot, Venus: Dove chariot, Mercury: Cockrel chariot, Pluto: Horse chariot, Saturn: Winged serpent chariot, and Juno: Human chariot.
Roman style Cameo jewellery was highly sought after in the 19th Century during the “Grand Tour” days when tourists developed a fascination with destinations such as Rome. They were a personal favourite of Queen Victoria also and were carved in the same classic style, usually depicting Gods and characters from Roman/ Greek mythology.
The cameos are set in ornate sterling silver frames, gilded in 18ct yellow gold and fitted with a secure box clasp at the end.
